UPOnline Excellence: Meet our Educators | University of Pretoria

With qualifications in Public Administration, Economics and Business Administration Prof

Michel Tshiyoyo brings valuable experience to UPOnline students enrolled in the

Postgraduate Diploma in Public Management.

Prof Tshiyoyo holds a BCom Honours in Economics and Business Administration, a

master's degree in Public Administration, and a PhD in Public Affairs. This robust educational background allows him to cover a wide range of subjects. Over 16 years, Prof Tshiyoyo has taught and continues to teach numerous Public Management and Administration modules at the School of Public Management and Administration in the Faculty of Economic

and Management Sciences.

As the facilitator for the UPOnline Advanced Public Financial Management and Budgeting module (PMA 711), Prof Tshiyoyo designed and has been offering this module since the start of the course. The role involves monitoring the module, marking activities, providing guidance and being hands-on to ensure that students successfully complete the module. Prof Tshiyoyo says he truly enjoys the live sessions where he can interact with students, listen to their problems and stories, provide solutions, and give feedback on their work. "These sessions are beneficial to students as they provide them with the necessary guidance to overcome the challenges they face."

He says one of his memorable experiences is seeing students initially anxious about Financial Management: master the module's content so well that they explain and simplify it to others. This happens when he challenges students to break down the module concepts and teach them to their partners, siblings, friends, or colleagues. "If you are able to do that exercise with ease, then know that you have mastered the module. Many of them run with this idea, and it makes their learning and teaching experience is easier."

As a virtual icebreaker, Prof Tshiyoyo always asks students if they have a personal or household budget. He uses the responses to connect the module content to the students' daily lives before discussing what should happen in government public financial management. This approach highlights the importance of financial literacy.

Passionate about soccer, sports cars, and photography, he often uses these interests to create analogies that help students understand module concepts better. These examples are so memorable that students often say they won’t forget them.

Feel free to reach out to Prof Michel Tshiyoyo during live sessions or via the course platform. He is dedicated to helping you succeed in this module and beyond!
