    The changing education landscape is demanding of teachers to be leaders and have management skills beyond what was expected before. The Bachelor of Education Honours in Leadership and Management is the very first online honours programme in Africa with six starts a year and offers just that. 
    It is a specialised qualification with a strong focus on research and aims to develop research capacity and academic scholarship. Students will take a close look at leadership theories and perspectives in the field of management. This part-time programme will require 21 hours of study a week and is specifically designed for principals, deputy principals, heads of departments, district officials, experienced teachers and those wanting to pursue an education leadership career in other communities of practice.

    The University of Johannesburg’s Admission and Selection Policy that is current at the time of the registration for this programme governs the admissions process.


    Admission requirements:

    • A four-year professional teaching degree on NQF level 7
      OR
    • An appropriate Bachelor’s degree and a professional teaching qualification (on NQF level 7)
      OR
    • A four-year professional teaching qualification(s) as well as an Advanced Diploma in a cognate sub-field of Education (on NQF level 7)
      AND
    • A 65% minimum average for the preceding degree
      Applicants with between 60% and 64% may be considered and teaching and leadership experience will be taken into consideration.

    Applications from persons with equivalent qualifications will be considered by a constituted status committee in line with the regulations of the university and faculty.
    Students who apply for this degree may undergo a selection process which can include an interview or written submission.

    Previous academic achievement and evidence of the necessary academic reading and writing skills to become a competent researcher of education leadership and management will be taken into account.

    Applicants with two to four years’ classroom or field experience will be given preference in the selection process.

    Meeting the faculty’s minimum requirements does not necessarily guarantee admission as places are limited.

    Module interruption and scheduled maintenance:

    In the event of unexpected module interruption on the due date for an activity, the online facilitator will notify students of a new due date.

    The programme is split over two years. Modules are undertaken over a seven-week period with a one-week break.

    Organisational Behaviour in Education

    This module introduces key concepts and theories relevant to the study of organisational behaviour in education.

    Skills gained in this module include the critical interpretation of policy developments and the critical analysis of financial management functions. Students will also gain an understanding of the relationship between societal developments and education policies as well the importance of effective and efficient financial management in schools.

    Education Theory A: Perspectives of Leadership and Management

    These two modules ensure a solid foundation in current theories of educational leadership and management to enable research to be done from a firm epistemological foundation.

    Research Methodology and Design

    This module is designed to strengthen the student’s fundamental knowledge of research methodologies and design in education leadership and management.

    Research Project A

    Through the completion of the four stages, students will engage in the research and writing up of that research in an area of specialisation. The entire project is supervised and assessed in stages by a suitable department member with expertise in that specialisation.

    Research Project B

    Fees for 2024

    CUT’s fee structure allows a student to pay as they progress. A student must pay for a module before they will be granted access to the material.
